Guitar studies that are not afraid of richer harmony

“Studies and Etudes for Guitar (1960s and 1970s)” by Stanislav Juřica presents a collection of shorter guitar pieces originally written for the composer’s own use. The publication follows the earlier title “Bagatelles and Other Guitar Pieces from the 1960s and 1970s” and gives students an opportunity to encounter a musical language that differs in several respects from much of the contemporary repertoire written for Czech music schools. The pieces are particularly characterized by harmonic richness and the use of dissonance, which here serves not as an obstacle but as a natural part of the musical expression. The individual pieces were written gradually, and only years later did the author discover that they could also serve as interesting teaching material for guitar students. The collection can therefore broaden the standard educational repertoire with more distinctive music and introduce students to a different approach to guitar literature, because even pedagogical repertoire occasionally deserves to let some unfamiliar harmonies through the window.

For guitarists

A collection of shorter pieces intended for teaching and practical study on the classical acoustic guitar.

Richer harmony

The pieces use a more varied harmonic language and dissonances that can broaden students’ musical experience.

Stanislav Juřica

The author originally wrote these pieces for his own use and later prepared them for publication after his students showed interest in them.

“

These Studies and Etudes continue the publication Bagatelles and Other Guitar Pieces from the 1960s and 1970s. They were also created quite spontaneously and exclusively for my own use. I was simply trying things out. Many years later, I returned to these little pieces and discovered that my students were interested in them, that they found them different and harmonically richer, and that they did not mind the dissonances. I would be pleased if students at other schools could also become acquainted with different music in this way, rather than with the worn-out clichés of contemporary guitar writing for Czech music schools.

About the author

Stanislav Juřica is the author of several guitar publications focused primarily on educational repertoire and shorter pieces for guitar students. His work also explores musical material that differs from standard school repertoire through its distinctive harmonic language and use of dissonance.

These pieces originally grew out of practical work with students, while some were written exclusively for the author’s own use. This publication follows Bagatelles and Other Guitar Pieces from the 1960s and 1970s and contains 20 pages of guitar studies and etudes.
