Blues for Guitar Ensemble with Room for Improvisation
Jihočeský kytarový blues by Adam Pavlíček was written for the 8th edition of the South Bohemian Guitar Festival as a piece for guitar ensemble. The composition is primarily intended for five guitarists, but it can also be performed by a larger ensemble. At the request of the festival organisers, the piece includes an improvisational section that gives the performers space for their own musical expression. The improvisation is optional and can be omitted without disrupting the overall flow of the composition. The publication contains the full score, individual parts, improvisation instructions and online recordings to support rehearsal and ensemble playing.

The piece Jihočeský kytarový blues was commissioned for the 8th edition of the South Bohemian Guitar Festival. The festival organisers asked the composer to write a piece for a younger guitar ensemble, with the possibility of including improvisation as part of the concept. This section is not compulsory, however, and the conductor can omit it completely without disturbing the flow of the composition. This allows the ensemble to adapt the piece to its own performing abilities and experience. The result is practical repertoire for ensemble playing that combines a prepared score with room for the performers’ own creativity.
Adam Pavlíček (*1985) is a guitarist, composer and guitar teacher with more than 20 years of teaching experience. He studied classical guitar at the Prague Conservatory, HAMU and the Academy of Music in Zurich, and has released two albums of his own compositions. He is also the author of the five-volume Kytarová škola guitar method, which guides students from their first notes towards more advanced repertoire, as well as Jihočeský kytarový blues, written for the South Bohemian Guitar Festival and its younger guitar ensemble.
