A musical journey beyond the walls of old fortresses

Behind the Fortress Walls is a cycle of ten pieces by Vítězslav Štefl for solo guitar, inspired by the atmosphere of medieval fortresses, castles and ruins. In the individual pieces, the composer works with a variety of moods and musical images, ranging from festive and peaceful moments to darker and more dramatic scenes. The publication offers repertoire for guitarists looking for music with a distinctive atmosphere and an evocative character. The 20-page music booklet contains ten solo guitar pieces connected by the common theme of medieval fortresses. The cycle is suitable for players who want to enrich their repertoire with thematically coherent guitar music.

Solo guitar

The cycle contains ten pieces written for solo guitar and offers a wide range of musical moods.

Medieval atmosphere

The individual pieces create musical images of celebrations, landscapes, night, solitude and danger.

Vítězslav Štefl

The cycle was written by musician, teacher, guitarist and composer Vítězslav Štefl.

“Simply? I like the Middle Ages, I like genius loci, when you come among the walls of old fortresses, castles and ruins, I like the atmosphere that music brings into the mind of the musician and listener.” In this cycle, the composer translates the atmosphere of old fortresses and medieval landscapes into ten pieces for guitar. Menuet, Intrada and Tanec create an image of a small celebration within the stone walls of a fortress. Zimní pohádka offers a more peaceful view of a snow-covered landscape, while other pieces work with motifs of night, solitude, light, darkness and danger. The individual titles help create an overall picture of the environment captured by the cycle. The music moves between peaceful, romantic and more dramatic moods, giving the guitarist space for expressive interpretation. The cycle therefore connects solo guitar with an evocative musical story set in the world of medieval fortresses.
