Playing in different positions is one of the foundations of guitar technique. In higher positions the left hand often works with less tension than in first position and allows a more cultivated tone. Reduced use of open strings also enables more expressive vibrato and tone colour. For this reason it is important not to be afraid of exploring the entire fretboard. Each piece in this collection introduces the notes characteristic of a given position while keeping the fingering stable throughout the exercise. Once the hand settles naturally, the guitar begins to resonate in new colours. These small compositions can become the first step toward confident playing across the whole fingerboard.
Milan Zelenka is a Czech classical guitarist and pedagogue. Alongside his concert career he has devoted himself to teaching and to writing educational materials for guitar students. His publications are based on many years of practical experience.
